Electra or The Birds of Death and the Mongoloid Troubadour: a monologue

January 6, 7, 13, 14, 2008.

Red Barn Theatre will open the first production of this season's special Sunday/Monday Night Series at 8 p.m. Sunday january 6, when George Murphy performs his original monologue "Electra or the Birds of Death and the Mongoloid Troubadour." This is only the second public production of Murphy's performance piece since its premiere at the Red Barn as part of the 1995 Key West Theatre Festival.
It's 1960, with the promise of an idyllic summer in a small New England coastal town. What could go wrong? The storyteller weaves his magic in an unforgettable true story of mayhem, catastrophe and redemption told through the eyes of an 11 year old boy. Eerily reminiscent of stories by Stephen King or a flashback to the harrowing tale told in "Stand by Me," this memory play recounts a series of amazing events and coincidences peopled with a cast of oddball characters. With its sense of irony and mysticism and bold use of symbolism "Electra" plays like modern Greek mythology that opens and closes on a stage filled with lightning, illuminating the true human condition. Other performances of this powerful and wildly funny autobiographical work will take place at 8 p.m. Monday, and again at 8 p.m. Jan 13, and 14.
George Murphy is the author of two books of poetry and a stage adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's "Mother Night." He has also edited numerous literary anthologies, including "Poetics: Essays of the Art of Poetry," and "The Key West Reader." He has been featured on stage at the Red Barn in numerous hit plays, including "Jeffrey," "Pageant," "Shel's Shorts" and "Sherlock's Secret Life."
